New High-resolution 70-cm Wavelength Radar Images of the Moon

چکیده
Introduction: Radar maps of the lunar nearside at 70-cm wavelength currently have a spatial resolution of 3-5 km, and have been used to identify differences in regolith physical and chemical properties [e.g., 1-3]. Data at such long wavelengths are of particular interest due to their penetration depth of 5-10 m in even lossy lunar materials. Using the Arecibo Observatory 430 MHz radar system, we are collecting new images of the lunar surface with spatial resolution of ~300 m. These data will be used to study age and chemistryrelated differences among the mare deposits, regional differences in scattering properties in the highlands, and areas of possible permanent shadow at the lunar poles.

Radar probing of planetary regoliths: An example from the northern rim of Imbrium basin
[1] Imaging radar measurements at long wavelengths (e.g., >30 cm) allow deep (up to tens of meters) probing of the physical structure and dielectric properties of planetary regoliths. We illustrate a potential application for a Mars orbital synthetic aperture radar (SAR) using new Earth-based 70-cm wavelength radar data for the Moon. The terrae on the northern margin of Mare Imbrium, the Montes...

Data: We transmit a 13-cm wavelength, circularlypolarized signal from the Arecibo radio telescope, and receive the echoes from the Moon in both senses of circular polarization using the Greenbank Telescope in West Virginia. A coded signal with time resolution of 0.1 μs, and a 50-min coherent integration time, provide 20-m spatial resolution for areas at moderate to high incidence angles that ar...
متن کاملSurface morphology of domes in the Marius Hills and Mons Rümker regions of the Moon from Earth-based radar data
[1] Clusters and coalesced complexes of domes represent a relatively rare landform within the extensive, low-relief, lunar maria. While they are typically spectroscopically similar to mare basalts emplaced by high-volume, low-viscosity eruptions, the large-scale morphology of the domes is more consistent with slower emplacement and/or more viscous magma. We use new Earth-based radar data to stu...
متن کاملRegolith properties in the south polar region of the Moon from 70-cm radar polarimetry
The south polar region of the Moon contains areas permanently shadowed from solar illumination, which may provide cold traps for volatiles such as water ice. Previous radar studies have emphasized the search for diagnostic polarization signatures of thick ice in areas close to the pole, but near-surface regolith properties and regional geology are also important to upcoming orbital studies of t...
متن کاملRugged lava flows on the Moon revealed by Earth-based radar
[1] Basaltic volcanism is widespread on the lunar nearside, and returned samples suggest that the mare-forming magmas had low viscosity that led to primarily sheet-like deposits. New 70-cm wavelength radar observations that probe several meters beneath the lunar surface reveal differences in mare backscatter properties not explained by age or compositional variations. We interpret areas of high...
